Effects of COD, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus and total nitrogen on water quality

COD, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus and total nitrogen are common major pollution indicators in water bodies. Their impact on water quality can be analyzed from many aspects.
First of all, COD is an indicator of the content of organic matter in water, which can reflect the pollution of organic matter in the water body. Water bodies with high concentrations of COD tend to have high turbidity and color, and are prone to breed bacteria, resulting in shortened water life. In addition, high concentrations of COD will also consume dissolved oxygen in the water, leading to hypoxia or even suffocation in the water body, causing harm to aquatic life.
Secondly, ammonia nitrogen is one of the important nutrients in water, but if the concentration of ammonia nitrogen is too high, it will lead to eutrophication of the water body and promote the formation of algae blooms. Algae blooms not only make the water turbid, but also consume a large amount of dissolved oxygen, leading to hypoxia in the water. In severe cases, it may cause a large number of fish deaths. In addition, high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen will produce unpleasant odors, which will have adverse effects on the surrounding environment and residents’ lives.
Third, total phosphorus is an important plant nutrient element, but excessive total phosphorus concentration will promote the growth of algae and other aquatic plants, leading to eutrophication of water bodies and the occurrence of algal blooms. Algal blooms not only make the water turbid and smelly, but also consume a large amount of dissolved oxygen and affect the self-purification ability of the water. In addition, some algae such as cyanobacteria may produce toxic substances, causing harm to the surrounding environment and ecosystems.
Finally, total nitrogen is composed of ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen and organic nitrogen, and is an important indicator reflecting the degree of nutrient pollution in water. Excessively high total nitrogen content will not only promote eutrophication of water bodies and the formation of algal blooms, but also reduce the transparency of water bodies and inhibit the growth of aquatic organisms. In addition, excessive total nitrogen content will also affect the flavor and taste of the water body, affecting residents’ drinking and life.
To sum up, COD, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus and total nitrogen are important indicators that affect water quality, and their high concentrations will have a negative impact on the water ecological environment and health. Therefore, in daily life and production, we should strengthen the monitoring and management of water quality, take effective measures to reduce water pollutant discharge, and protect water resources and ecological environment.
